Purpose, Money and Pleasure: Why You Don’t Have to Choose Between Them

Written by Mary J Fourie PCC — Purpose, Money & Pleasure Coach

Purpose, money and pleasure. Most of us were taught — implicitly or explicitly — that these are three competing things. That life is a series of trade-offs.

You can be purposeful or profitable. Responsible or playful. You can work hard or enjoy yourself. And pleasure? That’s the reward at the end, once everything else is handled.

Many of the people I work with have built impressive lives on exactly this logic — brilliant, capable, driven humans quietly running on empty because they accepted a version of success that left out the most important ingredient: themselves.

Here’s a different way of looking at it.

Purpose, money, and pleasure are not three separate goals. They are one integrated experience of being fully alive.

Purpose Is Why You’re Here

Not the job title. Not the role. The deeper thing — the contribution only you can make, in the way only you can make it. Purpose is what makes you feel most like yourself. The work that makes time disappear. The conversations that light you up. The problems you can’t stop thinking about because something in you knows you’re part of the solution.

When you’re living your purpose, you don’t just feel useful. You feel real.

But purpose without resource is martyrdom. The most meaningful work in the world still needs to be funded. The idea that spiritual or purposeful work should somehow exist outside of financial reality is one of the most damaging myths I encounter in practice.

Money Is Energy

It is not separate from your purpose — it is the resource that makes your purpose sustainable in the world.

When your money flows from work that is genuinely aligned with your values and gifts, something shifts. It stops feeling like compensation and starts feeling like exchange. You give something real. You receive something real. The relationship with money becomes cleaner, more conscious, more alive.

Here’s what years of working with people on their finances has shown me: the humans with the healthiest relationship to money are not necessarily those with the most of it. They’re the ones who know why they want it, what it’s for, and how to let it flow both in and out with intention.

Money without purpose is hollow. We see this everywhere — financially successful people quietly miserable because the wealth isn’t tethered to anything that genuinely matters. The bank account grows. The aliveness shrinks.

Pleasure Is Not the Reward. It Is the Fuel.

This one tends to surprise people the most.

We have collectively decided that pleasure is frivolous — a guilty indulgence that responsible adults moderate carefully. That wanting to feel good in your body, to experience joy, to be touched and fed and delighted by existence, is somehow at odds with being serious and financially responsible.

It isn’t.

Pleasure is the intelligence of the body. It tells you what is life-giving and what is life-draining. It is the signal system that lets you know when you’re on the right path — that full-body yes, that spine tingle, that spark of this is it.

When you cut off access to pleasure you don’t become more productive. You become more defended. Your creativity narrows. Your relationships flatten. Your work loses its aliveness. You show up technically present but energetically absent.

Purpose and money without pleasure creates a driven, resourced, quietly exhausted life. Most high-achievers know this feeling intimately.

What Happens When All Three Are Present

Not sequentially. Not as a reward system. Not one day when everything is sorted. But now, as an integrated daily practice.

When you’re living in purpose, stewarding the flow of money with intention, and embracing what brings you genuine pleasure — something becomes possible that none of the three can create alone.

You contribute something meaningful. That contribution is valued and resourced. And with that resource and that purpose in place, you cultivate an overall aliveness — through your health, your relationships, your creativity, your senses, your spirituality.

Purpose creates the manifested value that attracts money, which you are able to receive because you’ve surrendered to pleasure, and can then direct towards the people, things, and experiences that make your heart sparkle.

You feel fulfilled. You feel free. You feel fully human.

This is not a fantasy. This is what becomes possible when you stop treating these three things as competing priorities and start treating them as one unified field of being alive.
