Description

Nadia Ring, an esteemed academic and passionate advocate for social justice, has been a distinguished member of the academic community at the University of Cape Town since 2018. Under the mentorship of Dr. Louis Blond, Nadia earned her Masters in the Study of Religions. Her thesis, "Cultural and Political Recognition of Indigenous Minorities in Democratic South Africa," is a profound exploration advocating for systemic changes in politics and law to support marginalized communities.

Alongside her academic pursuits, Nadia has accumulated 12 years of experience in ecstatic dance, enriching her understanding of the therapeutic and communal benefits of cultural practices. Her interest in indigenous Trance Dance, or New Moon Dance, was sparkled by her research of the archive documents from 17th century,  that describe a monthly New Moon Dance and gathering practiced by Khoi people. She views these gatherings as forgotten/forbidden technology of harmonious human coexistence, that served a number of social functions such as conflict resolution, communal safety and witnessing, source of ecstasy and the space for trance states and healing.

In 2022 she lived with Indigenous San people from the Northern Namibia.

In 2024 she took a course in Shamanic Studies.

Her educational journey is further diversified with a certificate in permaculture design and natural building, emphasizing her commitment to sustainable living practices.

Nadia also holds a postgraduate degree in Communications, which complements her deep-rooted interests in societal dynamics and minority rights. Her coursework has included Religion and Society, Cognitive Neuroscience, Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology, providing her with a unique lens to analyze the psychological impacts of societal structures.

Dedicated to addressing failures of South African masculinities resulting in gender-based violence, Nadia now manages several nonprofit projects for the organization Greenhouse.

She is also the visionary behind the transformative event "Composting Patriarchy: Ecstatic Gathering and Dance". This event features shamanic ceremonies, ecstatic dance with indigenous movement techniques, fire rituals, and organic cooking, emphasizing Nadia’s commitment to transformative communal experiences that create deep connections with oneself, others, and the Earth.
